What my brother taught me 6/1/18

Ever since I was a kid

I learned from my brother,

asked him many questions

and here is another

do girls have cooties?

so boldly he taught me

how to traverse their world,

how to gel your hair

and how to love a girl.

he taught me how sweet

a lover’s laugh and smile,

how to treat your queen

and go the extra mile.

he taught me how to dance

at my first school ball,

he picked me up and smiled

when my waltz became a fall.

so there it plainly is

the greatest lesson of all,

he showed me how to fly

when a girl makes you fall.

Brothers of Frightful Sea 5/28/18

We vikings,

raiders of foreign shores,

brave the unknown steel

Each step a swing,

Each word a block,

For Each day and Each way,

to breath unscathed,

a quiet scream to say,

we haven’t given up

we do not surrender!

so we stand against the tide,

arms out stretched

for love’s wings unfurl inside us

and give us flight above all else.

oh, my kin of war

guard me mine

for all hope we have

is all we hope to be

my brother of frightful sea.

To this, I am free 5/27/18

to this land which poisons me,

to these souls which judge me,

I know no safety

but the freedom of pre-conceived condemnation.

I know no comfort

but the washing of the vile

harshly piled upon my skin.

to this land which poisons me,

to these souls which judge me,

know this…

you can squeeze me

bend me

smack me

claw at me until you’re satisfied,

but I shall never break.

to this land

to those souls

I am free.

The Time Capsule: by Penny Preston 5/22/18

My calendar must be replaced

this I hate to do.

The memories invoked within are pleasing to review.

I’ll forget about the dentist.

Don’t remind me of the vet,

but the movie night with girlfriends

brought some fun I don’t regret.

I enjoyed the cookout with my sons.

Had pleasure at the beach

The potluck at work had lots of laughts

I like reliving each…

I, now, glance down into my purse

my checkbook is all full.

ohhh…. the craftshow ….

Down to Earth 5/11/18

The best part of me

is also the worst

always in my head

always far away

Dreaming of stories

playing fantasy

never in the now

never truly here

All the more wildly I need,

a heavenly body

to pull me to earth

a true dream girl

to wake me right up

a soul like yours

to keep me present

show me whats around

pull me down

down

deeper down

to earth, this wonderful earth

to life, this wonderful life

to this moment,

here with you,

my beautiful love.

Limp Again 4/24/18

I am running fast enough

to never catch my breath

build, create, dismantle

until I’ve nothing left

step, turn, and step again

I run further on,

break my legs

and limp for days

never noticing the ponds

I run too hard

and hurt myself

I’ll probably do it again

bathe in blood, and sweat, and sin

why did I begin?

oh so fast,

I limp again,

I pray life slows me down.

If it can only teach itself

or learn a method how.

To the men who made me 4/20/2018

To the men who made me

forged me from steel

you’ve given me strength

and a love more real,

than ever I’ve known,

or ever I’ll feel.

Dear father, please hear me

know deep my heart

you’ve shown me life’s gears,

its machinations,

its parts.

Dear brother, you whole wild youth

I see earthly remains

of bold innate truth,

its brave fortitude,

burning greatly in you.

To the men who made me

chiseled from stone

you’ve given more life

than ever I’ve known

and I’ll love you more

than can ever be shown.

The Calling 4/13/2018

To the road on the hill

which beacons me softly

whispering sweetly,

“do not survive, but thrive

take the immaculate misconception

and run from it”

To the house by the lake

which acts as bait

to take me

entrap me,

“do not maintain, or know restraint

take the inconceivable deviation

and drive far away”

To the clouds on the horizon

which go on forever

stating plainly,

“do not stay in this safety

go boldly,freely

up

and on”
